He sees her for the first time on the street, walking slowly towards him like poetry in motion. She is dressed in a black sari and matching blouse; her pitch-dark hair caressing her body. And in that singular moment, Sachin ( Prateik), a mechanical engineer who wants to make movies, is transformed into a butterfly of uncontrollable desire. He is smitten and finds himself walking on air.

Ekk Deewana Tha is the Hindi remake of Gautham Menon's Tamil film Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya which was a huge commercial hit. Somewhere, something obviously got lost in translation.

All in all, ‘Ekk Deewana Tha’ is a movie that seems to have been lost in translation. However, Prateik deserves praise for his efforts. Also, the cinematography scores well, and some marvellously shot scenes in Kerala are a visual treat. Manu Rishi, who plays the role of Prateik’s older buddy, is charming. The few laughs that the actor delivers are truly enjoyable.

Ek Deewana Tha is a never ending saga that you so wish should end! Easily avoided. Listen to Hosanna on radio instead!

3ups and downs: Fresh pair with a partially good on-screen chemistry trying to be a part of a lovey-dovey love story could be one reason to give it a try. A dragged storyline which is not worth the climax disappoints. Girls, who can endure anything for a feel good factor to see a guy madly in love with a girl, can too grab a ticket. Overall, Ek Deewana Tha entertains sporadically.

What was the cameran who is working on a Ramesh Sippy film, doing as a sidekick to someone who is 20 years his junior? I mean we are talking about a generation gap here. Then there's also HDFC Bank and PVR who play supporting roles. They have more screen time than Sachin Khedekar! Finally, a sentence in Malayalam...Enganatha cinemeka evedia preykshakar? (How can a movie like this find an audience?)

On the whole, EKK DEEWANA THA has a few sparkling moments, that's about it. However, it lacks the fizz for the spectator to godeewana!

Menon tries hard to make Ek Deewana Tha work with Tamil sensibilities but it ends up as a jarring and exhausting experience. The publicity campaign for the film has pegged it as “an A.R.Rahman and Javed Akhtar musical”. While it is certainly a musical, neither of the two incredible talents can do much to salvage the film. Rahman’s soundtrack is surprisingly weak, while Akhtar’s lyrics are very unlike his poetic style. While Menon must be lauded for the energy to make the same film three times, in three different languages, this is one case where it’s clear he’s remade the film one time too many.

The fact that talented Delhi boy Manu Rishi, who also plays a supporting role in the film, has written the dialogues, makes some of it palatable. But Rishi's acting skills, which come to the fore occasionally as he goes about playing supportive companion to the hero, are at variance with the various awkward angles of the film. Here's the Konkan-Maharashtrian Sachin, intent upon getting into film-making despite his engineering degree. And there's the Malayali Jessie, whose strict father never let her watch any movies.

I am told the Hindi and Telugu versions have a happy ending, while the Tamil one has a different, not so happy one. We watched the happy-it-ended one.

Through his struggle and strive to win his lady love, Sachin keeps ranting one line, “Duniya mein itni ladkiyan hain par mujhe Jessie se hi pyaar kyun hua?” Perhaps, because Jessie Jaisi Koi Nahin? But the question you will find yourself pondering over through the film will be, “Multiplex mein itni movies hain, phir maine iss movie ka ticket hi kyun liya?”

I'm going with a generous two out of five for 'Ekk Deewana Tha'. Even A R Ramhan's score offers only sporadic relief. The only real discovery you make through this film is Prateik Babbar's immense likeability. Now if only the kid could act!
