Barfi! is not a story that will make it into the ‘Chicken Soup for the deaf and mute’ or the ‘Spinach salad for the autistic’. But when you watch the film, you will realize that we should only be glad about that. In short, Barfi says it best when he says nothing at all.

The film has generated a lot of interest among the audiences via its promos and melodious music. Though the focus will remain on Ranbir Kapoor, but Priyanka Chopra will also be expected to come up with a power-packed performance as an autistic girl. Ileana D’Cruz can be spared as this is her first film in Hindi.

Barfi! comes as close to being a modern masterpiece as cinematically possible. To miss it would be a crime. To embrace it is to serenade the sublime.

Barfi wins your heart even before the credits start. Its cheerful bubbly jingle advising you to keep your children and cellphones off because the picture has started sets the tone for the rest of the film.

The audience’s sympathies would lie with this good looking boy even before he walks into the screen. Filmmakers know this. Most physically challenged characters receive such unconditional love. Barfi is essentially a nomadic bummer. While he seems perfectly smart enough to find a job – he can read and write – I don’t think he does anything to make a living. He’s a prankster by profession. The local inspector has spent his full career merely chasing this boy down. It says a lot about the crime rate of 1970s Darjeeling, where the film is set.

All in all, Anurag Basu’s ‘Barfi!’ is a perfect sweet treat for his audience. Like it has been discussed, those film makers who have been portraying the handicapped as dull and boring in their films must take a lesson from ‘Barfi!’. Go and savour it!
