The film is based on the life and times of a superstar heroine from the dream factory we call 'Bollywood'. The film is a daring, shocking, glamorous, scandalous behind the scenes account of the reality behind the world of glitz and glamour that our film stars inhabit. For a country obsessed with films and film stars, HEROINE will take audiences on a voyeuristic journey to see what really goes on behind the closed doors of make up rooms and vanity vans. It will give them a chance to go beyond the gorgeous smiles and politically correct quotes, to see what really happens in the lives of India's sweethearts. The bitching and the politics, the secrets and the lies, the incredible highs of fame and the lonely depths of failure.
Director: Madhur Bhandarkar

Welcome to the cesspool of enchantment or ‘glamour ka daldal’ as director Madhur Bhandarkar would like to articulate. Films about people behind the films tend to get preachy as filmmakers believe they know more about their own kind than anyone else. And in this case, the misplaced confidence ensures that the research department is sacked and most dialogues begin with ‘Humaari industry mein’… and end with ‘manipulate karo ya ho jao’, ‘zip aur zabaan sambhalke kholna chahiye’, ‘confidence se bolo toh jhooth ko bhi sach maana jaata hain’, ‘heroines ka waqt bohot kam hota hain’ and everything else in between. Basically, Bhandarkar likes to spell it out like the backbenchers aren’t paying attention.

At a film awards show, which given this movie’s budgets could’ve looked as grand as the actual ones, yesteryear heartthrob Helen is handed the lifetime achievement award. Helen plays one Shagufta Rizwi. In her acceptance speech, Shagufta thanks all those who stood by her during her career. But more importantly she chooses to thank especially those who chose to abandon her when the chips were down. Because those are the people, she correctly suggests, who really end up teaching you life's most important lessons.

You know, important things like how actresses have to woo superstar wives to be paired opposite their husbands or how their roles are edited out when they refuse to sleep with the leading man, or how actresses are such superficial people who need nameless pills and cigarettes and drink to keep themselves sane. The film also reveals how film reporters get paid international vacations just for printing a particular actress’ story regularly! (Need to find out how that works!)

We recommend that you watch this film. It might be a dissapointment according to Madhur Bhandarkar standards. But nevertheless, its a watchable story. Kareena Kapoor's brilliant acting also makes it a good watch. Its good entertainment on a weekend. Recommended!

Heroine is Kareena's Dirty Picture. The actress has shown ample cleavage and partaken in some really intimate bedroom scenes. Definitely worth a dekho!

On the whole, HEROINE is yet another hard-hitting motion picture from Madhur Bhandarkar. For persistently choosing women-centric themes, for consistently winning national acclaim and most significantly, magnetizing moviegoers in large numbers to view his cinema, the efforts of the maverick film-maker deserve to be lauded. Watch HEROINE for Madhur's imposing direction, for Kareena's superlative performance, watch it also for its fearless, inspiring and enlightening storyline divulging the scandalous realities of the movie industry. Try not to miss it!
